Profile

Rick Popert MS FRCS (Urol) is a consultant urological surgeon and Clinical Lead in Urology at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. His specialist expertise is in Robotic prostatectomy, dynamic prostate brachytherapy, transperineal prostatic biopsies and Holmium laser prostate surgery. He qualified from St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College in 1985.

Having completed his higher surgical training at Guy’s after a period of urological research at King’s College Hospital, he was appointed as a consultant in 1996. He established a dedicated multidisciplinary prostate cancer service which provides the most comprehensive treatments available in the UK. The service has developed from open surgery to laparoscopic and more recently laparoscopic robotic assisted surgery with the Da Vinci system (Intuitive Surgical). The robotic surgery programme at Guy’s was established in 2005 and was the first such programme in the UK. The department has the largest experience of robotic surgery in the UK and carries out over 250 cases per year.

Mr Popert has been carrying out robotic surgery since 2006 and has done over 300 cases. He also introduced a single visit day case Dynamic Prostate brachytherapy programme in 2005 which is suitable for the treatment of lower risk cancer patients in whom radical surgery may be unnecessary. This treatment can be used for larger prostates and those that have had previous prostate surgery He has treated over 500 cases with this brachytherapy technique.

He has a specialist interest in the diagnosis and treatment of early prostate cancer. He has extensive experience in active surveillance and has developed a localising protocol for Transperineal Saturation biopsies of the prostate which in conjunction with the high quality MRI scans available through Nuada Medical Specialist Imaging provides the most comprehensive diagnostic assessment of patients considered to be at risk of prostate cancer. Biopsy results are available within 24 hours.
