Professional background
Dr Harland trained in medical oncology at the Royal Marsden Hospital following 3 years of research on clinical pharmacology (Hammersmith Hospital) and biochemical pharmacology (Institute of Cancer Research, Sutton). His MD thesis was on mechanisms of resistance to chemotherapy in human tumours.
He worked as a senior lecturer in medical oncology for a year in Glasgow before being appointed to the Institute of Urology, UCL. His base was at the Middlesex and is now at the UCH Oncology Department.
His clinical and research work is on testis, bladder, prostate and penis cancers. He has been the Urology Tumour Board chairman for the North London Cancer Network and is currently the vice-chairman of the UCLH urology multi-disciplinary team. He has served for many years on the MRC/NCRI working party for testis cancer and chaired the bladder cancer working party. He currently chairs the NCRI Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer Subgroup. Within UCL medical school he leads on undergraduate oncology teaching.
